Thunder Athletics, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization
Thunder Athletics was started in 2012 by Randy Skierka, a former D1 basketball player and coach. After moving to Nebraska in 1995 from Montana, Randy started coaching high school and AAU basketball. During this time, he saw so many great students/athletes who were dropping out of school or not using their athletic abilities to further their education. He felt he had to do something to give these students/athletes a better chance to make it to college. He started Thunder Athletics.
It is the mission of Thunder Athletics to empower young people through servant leadership and positive coaching principles to overcome the challenges that youth face today. Thunder Athletics is dedicated to creating positive role models by using basketball as one of our many venues. We will focus our funding, time, and energy on committed grassroots philosophies that instill our youth with leadership skills, decrease juvenile delinquency, alleviate poverty, and foster respect for one another.
In 2019 Randy changed the programs name from Thunder Elite to Powerhouse Hoops of NE, joining the Powerhouse Hoops of AZ program. He did this to help his program reach national exposure.
All donations go towards our student/athletes’ tournament fees, uniforms, travel expenses, food, and so much more. Nobody at Thunder Athletics pulls in any type of salary as 100% of the donations go towards the student/athletes.
We are asking for your help as many of our students/athletes cannot afford to play at such a high level. 88% of players who have been in our program for two or more years have received basketball scholarships, and 100% have graduated from high school. This wouldn’t be possible without donations, which are tax-deductible. Anything helps as a lot of our players can’t even afford to pay for their own food on our trips. Our coaches all donate their time and personal finances toward our students/athletes during the AAU season. We do go by the name of Powerhouse Hoops of NE as it has become a staple in the AAU basketball realm.
This past year, 2022’s U17 team, coached by Randy ended up ranked #2 in Recruit Hoops Circuit out of 46 teams. More importantly, is that 8 of the 10 players received college scholarships. The other two will end up receiving scholarships this year. I have a network of over 500 college coaches of all divisions, to whom I send out info on all my players.
Sincerely,
Randy Skierka
